Back to the Future, Myth, Meaning (and even 9/11) - with Daniel Luxton

'What the hell does 9/11 have to do with deep spirituality?' That's the question Alex Tsakiris posed at the end of our conversation on the Skeptiko podcast. Taking up the challenge is today's guest, Daniel Luxton, who contacted me with his answer. You wouldn't guess, but it has a lot to do with the Back to the Future films. In this interview Daniel talks about the myth and meaning of these wonderful films and whether they really predicted future events.

Adam Fitzgerald and I have concluded our Roads to 9/11 series on this channel and Adam has started a new channel dedicated solely to 9/11 studies - on which I am assisting.
This is a clip from the opening episode, where Adam asks me how I became interested 9/11 myself. I talk about my loss of faith in the establishment, interest in imperialism, 9/11 conspiracy theory and how studying philosophy helped me navigate these choppy waters.

Elaine Thorpe is a trance medium who channels the spirit of Jonathan Hunter, a Victorian gentleman who lived from 1845-91. In this interview I ask Elaine about her journey to become a medium. Elaine then goes into trance and I speak directly to Jonathan, asking him about both his life in 19th century London as well as his existence now.

Climate Anxiety, Alarmism and Denial, with Kristy Johnsson
Sunday Jan 19, 2020
Sunday Jan 19, 2020
Kristy Johnsson is a somatic therapist specialising in climate related anxiety. In today’s interview I’ll be asking her about her work, whilst relating some of my own struggles with despairing visions of the future.
Kristy has also done work in environmental anthropology and is herself deeply concerned about climate change. I’m not. Whilst I don’t consider my position to be an extreme one, it’s certainly raise eyebrows, dropped jaws and earned me the label of ‘denier’ in the past.
Kristy and I attempt a conversation where we explore how we arrived at our contrasting opinions. The aim is to understand rather than argue, and to see if there’s some common ground to be found in there somewhere. We’re doing this as an antidote to what is so often a hostile and unproductive area of discussion.

The Dark Night of the Soul, with Fiona Robertson
Friday Jan 03, 2020
Friday Jan 03, 2020
Fiona Robertson returns to the podcast to talk about her latest book, The Dark Night of the Soul. Fiona is referring to the archetypal experience of entering a period of darkness and despair during a process of spiritual awakening. We talk about our own dark nights our emergence from them back into the light and how we've come to relate to the traditionally more troubling aspect of our psyches. For me this interview was one of the most personally insightful ones I've recorded provoking self-reflection whilst it was still in progress.

Tuesday Dec 17, 2019
Lucid a dreaming teacher Charlie Morley returns to the podcast today as I continue our series on Hell. Charlie is the author of dreaming through darkness a book about engaging the shadow through lucid dreaming. His explorations of this area have included entering into his own personal image of Hell. I'll be asking about the psychological insights such adventures can bring and the benefits of being willing to engage with out darkest fears. Charlie is also a student of Tibetan Buddhism, a spirituality containing some of the richest and most gruesome depictions of Hell, he starts us off by explaining the mythos and symbolic meaning of the hell realms found within that tradition.

Achetypes & Body Image, on the Archetypal Tarot Podcast
Sunday Oct 06, 2019
Sunday Oct 06, 2019
Hello everybody, I was recently a guest on the Archetypal Tarot Podcast, alongside Nicole Schnackenberg. We spoke about body image from a spiritual and mythical perspective, talking about the soul's relationship with the body, the hero's journey, films such as Labyrinth and even a bit of Game of Thrones. Even if Tarot is not your thing, The Archetypal Tarot Podcast is one the best shows on mythology and symbolism there is. If you are into Tarot, the hosts Julienne and Cyndera have done a complete course on the symbolism of the Major Arcana. I can't overstate how much I enjoyed recording this and I hope you enjoy it too.
