With the recent rising tensions in Kosovo, Patrick MacFarlane invited me on his Vital Dissent Podcast to discuss the breakup of Yugoslavia. This is quite a complex historical event, with many complementary and contradictory narratives attributing the disintegration to internal and external factors. Was deep seated ethnic hatred to blame, or did the Slavic Union fall victim to the forces of empire?

On the 5th of September 1901 President William McKinley was assassinated by anarchist Leon Czolgosz. In spite of organised anarchist violence being a hallmark of this era, it has always been contended that Czolgosz acted alone. Today’s guest, history professor John Koerner contests this narrative. In his book, The Secret Plot to Kill McKinley, Professor Koerner peels back the layers to reveal a wider anarchist, and perhaps ultimately Republican Party plot, to dispense with America’s 25th President.

Recovered memories strongly influence various subcultures; from conspiracy theories, to a belief in past lives, right through to alien abductions. So are they reliable? Psychologists claim they are not. They say the boundary between memory and fantasy is much more porous than we take it to be, and it is entirely possible to rebrand fantasy as memory, up to and including inventing entire chunks of our biographies. Meanwhile, some psychotherapists believe they are regressing clients to childhood, where they can recover long repressed memories of abuse, and that doing so is an essential part of a healing process. Do either of these possibilities sound even remotely plausible?

A few months ago I attended a lecture by today’s guest, Dr. Anthony Marshall, on the work of another doctor, Otto Warburg. Dr. Warburg was an expert in respiratory conditions who developed a theory of cancer based around oxygen deficiency. I asked Dr. Marshall to come on the show and explain that, as well as the role it played in his work and his wider views on modern medicine. As with everything medical I put on this channel, I’ll add the disclaimer that I’m not personally knowledgeable in this area, and my purpose is to provide interesting avenues of research, not treatment advice.
